單字講座 05：affectionate (adj) / effective (adj) / efficient (adj)

▍ affectionate (adj) 表示愛和溫暖的 = loving / caring
「動詞」affect 意指「影響」，然而衍生出的「名詞」affection 意指「愛」，和動詞意思截然不同。從 affection 衍生出的「形容詞」affectionate 則意指「表示愛和溫暖的」。
▶ 例 1：親臉頰、牽手、擁抱都是 表達愛的 動作。
Kissing on the cheek, holding hands, and hugging are all affectionate gestures.
▍effective (adj) 有效的 = effectual / producing an intended result
▶ 例 1：新冠肺炎疫苗在預防住院和死亡上是高度 有效的 。
COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective at preventing hospitalization and death.
▍ efficient (adj) 有效率的 = being effective without wasting time, effort or money
▶ 例 1：約診前就收集好病患資訊能 有效 減少病患候診時間，讓你的看診 更有效率 。
Gathering patient information before the appointment is effective at cutting patient wait times and makes your practice more efficient .
▶ 例 2：這家餐廳的員工很 有效率 ，沒等很久，我的餐點就上桌了。
The restaurant staff was very efficient . I didn’t wait long for my meal to be served.
小結：(1) 有效率 (efficient) 的事物一定是有效的 (effective)，但有效的事物卻不一定有效率。(2) efficient 可形容人事物，而 effective 只能形容事物，不能形容人。
